Hydrophilic coated aluminum foil

Hydrophilic coated aluminum foil is a high-performance material engineered to manage water. By making the foil "water-loving," it dramatically improves the efficiency, hygiene, and longevity of heat exchangers in air conditioners, refrigerators, and other cooling systems. It's a key enabling technology for modern, energy-efficient appliances.

The surface of hydrophilic coated aluminum foil has strong hydrophilicity. When used in air conditioners, it can optimize the ventilation effect of the heat exchanger, thereby increasing the heat exchange rate by 5%. In addition, hydrophilic coated aluminum foil also has other advantages such as anti-corrosion, anti-mold, and no odor. It is mainly used in the production of heat exchanger fins, such as air-conditioning condensers and evaporators, refrigerator frost-free evaporators/fin-type evaporators, Commercial refrigerator condenser and evaporator, automobile air conditioner condenser and evaporator, etc.

Hydrophilic aluminum foil is a deep-processed aluminum foil product that is coated with anti-corrosion coating and hydrophilic coating on plain aluminum foil. Aluminum foil made by coating an air-conditioning aluminum foil with a thickness of about 0.1mm with an anti-corrosion coating and a hydrophilic coating, and drying it in a drying oven. Hydrophilic foils can be surface-coated, often with blue and gold finishes.

Mechanism: When water condenses on a surface in a heat exchanger, it can form insulating droplets on a hydrophobic surface. On a hydrophilic surface, the water forms a thin film.

Result: This thin film drains away quickly and efficiently, allowing for continuous, unimpeded contact between the moist air and the cold surface. This leads to significantly better heat exchange efficiency.

Anti-Microbial & Anti-Fungal: A continuous water film that drains and dries quickly is far less hospitable to mold, mildew, and bacteria compared to stagnant water droplets. This is crucial for hygiene in applications like air conditioning.

Reduced Corrosion: By preventing water from sitting in droplets for long periods, the hydrophilic coating reduces the chance of pitting and corrosive attack on the aluminum surface, extending the life of the component.

Lower Airside Pressure Drop: In heat exchangers, water droplets can obstruct airflow. The thin film created by the hydrophilic coating minimizes this obstruction, reducing the energy needed for fans to push air through the system.

Improved Hygiene and Odor Prevention: By inhibiting microbial growth, it helps prevent the "dirty sock syndrome" and other odors associated with moldy air conditioners and refrigerators.

Hydrophilic coated aluminum foil Applications
Hydrophilic coated aluminum foil is almost exclusively used in the HVAC&R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) industry for heat exchangers.

Air Conditioner Evaporator Coils: This is the most common application. The evaporator coil gets cold, causing moisture in the air to condense on it. The hydrophilic coating ensures this condensate drains away efficiently, improving cooling performance and energy efficiency.

Refrigerator & Freezer Evaporators: Especially in frost-free models, efficient water drainage from the defrost cycle is essential. The hydrophilic coating ensures the defrosted water flows away to the drain pan instead of refreezing into ice, which can block airflow.

Dehumidifiers: The core function relies on condensing moisture from the air. A hydrophilic coating maximizes the dehumidification efficiency.

Heat Pumps: They function as air conditioners in cooling mode, so their evaporator coils benefit from the same properties.
