6061 Aluminum square bar is made from one of the most widely used heat treatable aluminum alloys. 

This grade of aluminum can be easily welded and machined. When in the annealed state, it can be cold  worked with no problem, allowing standard methods to be used for drilling, cutting, deep drawing, stamping, tapping and bending this alloy. Other methods of formability include heat working. In order to make this metal harder, precipitation hardening can be used, which should be done at 320 degrees F for a period of 18 hours, then air cooled. It should then undergo another eight hours at 350 degrees F, then air cooled. The annealing of this metal should last between two and three hours and should be performed at a temperature of 775 degrees F. This should then be followed by controlled cooling, where the temperature drops by 50 degrees F each hour until it reaches 500 degrees F.
