4343 (Outer Layers): This is the cladding or brazing alloy.

Composition: Primarily Aluminum-Silicon (Al-Si, ~6.8-8.2% Si). Silicon lowers the melting point of the cladding.

Function: During the furnace brazing process, the 4343 cladding melts (becomes liquid) at a temperature below the melting point of the core alloy. It flows via capillary action into the joints between fins and tubes, creating a strong, hermetic seal without melting the core structural material.

3003mod (Core): This is the core alloy, and "mod" means modified.

3003 Standard: A widely used manganese-bearing alloy (Al-Mn). It offers excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and moderate strength.

Modified (mod): The manufacturer has slightly altered the chemical composition (e.g., adding small amounts of Cu, Zn, or adjusting Mn/Cu ratios). This is typically done to:
Increase strength after brazing.
Enhance corrosion resistance (e.g., to prevent pitting).
Optimize the melting range to better match the brazing process.
Improve post-brazing sag resistance.

Excellent Brazability: The primary reason. The 4343 cladding is designed to melt and flow perfectly in controlled atmosphere brazing (CAB) furnaces (using a nitrogen atmosphere), creating leak-free joints between the fin stock and the tube material (often similar clad aluminum like 3003/4343 or 3003/4045 tubes).

High Thermal Conductivity: Aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat. The fin's job is to efficiently transfer thermal energy between the metal and the air passing through it. This alloy provides an optimal balance of conductivity and strength.

Corrosion Resistance: The 3003mod core offers good inherent resistance to corrosion. After brazing, the silicon-rich layer left on the surface (the residue from the molten 4343) can be treated with protective coatings (e.g., chromate or chromium-free conversion coatings) to further enhance resistance to moisture, salt spray, and other corrosive elements—critical for condenser coils exposed to the outdoors and evaporator coils that deal with condensation.

Formability and Strength: The 3003mod core alloy can be rolled very thin (common fin stock is 0.004" to 0.008" thick) while still maintaining the necessary strength to be punched into complex fin patterns (like louvered, wavy, or spine fins) without tearing. The "mod" ensures it retains enough strength after the high heat of brazing to prevent sagging or collapsing.

Lightweight and Cost-Effective: Aluminum is light, which reduces the overall weight of the HVAC unit. The brazing sheet process allows for the manufacture of entire heat exchanger cores in a single furnace cycle, which is highly efficient and cost-effective.
