What is Aluminum Sheet?
Aluminum sheet is a flat-rolled aluminum product. It is typically defined by its thickness:Sheet: Generally considered to be between 0.2 mm (0.008 inches) and 6.35 mm (0.250 inches) thick. A
nything thicker is usually called "plate."
Anything thinner is called "foil" or "shim stock."It is
one of the most versatile and widely used forms of aluminum due to its excellent combination of properties.
Advantages of aluminium sheet
Lightweight: About one-third the density of steel, making it ideal for applications where weight savings are critical (e.g., aerospace, automotive).
Corrosion Resistance: Naturally forms a protective oxide layer that prevents rust, making it suitable for harsh environments and outdoor applications.
Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Certain alloys can be very strong while remaining lightweight, especially when heat-treated.
Formability: Can be easily bent, stamped, drawn, and spun into complex shapes.
Machinability: Many alloys are relatively easy to cut, drill, and machine.
Conductivity: Excellent conductor of heat and electricity (though not as good as copper).
Non-Magnetic & Non-Sparking: Essential for specific electrical and safety applications.
Reflectivity: Highly reflective to both heat and light.
Recyclability: 100% recyclable without loss of its inherent properties, making it a sustainable choice.
Tempers (Hardness Designations) of aluminum sheet
The temper describes the mechanical properties (hardness, strength) of the sheet.
O (Annealed): Soft, fully ductile, and easiest to form. Has the lowest strength.
HXX (Strain Hardened): Hardened by cold-working after rolling.
H18: Full hard (least ductile, highest strength from work-hardening).
H14: Half hard.
H32: Strain hardened and stabilized. A common temper for 3003 and 5052.
TXX (Heat Treated): Hardened by solution heat treatment and aging.
T6: Solution heat-treated and then artificially aged. This is the hardest and strongest temper for alloys like 6061.
Standard Sizes and Finishes
Sizes of aluminum sheet:
Thickness: Ranges from thin foil to heavy plate. Common sheet gauges are 0.032", 0.040", 0.063", 0.080", 0.125", etc. (also measured in millimeters or gauge).
Width: Can be purchased in standard widths (e.g., 48", 60") or cut-to-size.
Length: Standard sheets are often 96", 120", or 144" long, but can be cut to any length.
Finishes of aluminum sheet :
Mill Finish: The standard finish straight from the rolling mill. It has a non-uniform, slightly shiny appearance and may have light oil.
Brushed (Satin): Created by brushing the surface with an abrasive belt, giving it a uniform linear grain. Popular for appliances and decorative panels.
Anodized: An electrochemical process that thickens the natural oxide layer. It dramatically increases corrosion and wear resistance and allows for coloring (clear, black, gold, red, etc.).
Painted/Powder Coated: A layer of paint or powder is applied and cured for color and additional protection.
Embossed: Rolled with a pattern (e.g., diamond plate, tread plate) for slip resistance and aesthetic appeal.
