6061 O Aluminium Sheet
6061 is one of the most versatile and commonly used aluminum alloys. It is part of the 6000 series, which uses magnesium and silicon as its primary alloying elements. This makes it a heat-treatable alloy known for its excellent combination of strength, weldability, machinability, and corrosion resistance.
Properties of 6061-O Aluminum Sheet
- Low Strength: In its annealed state, 6061 has the lowest strength of its various tempers (e.g., T4, T6). It is not suitable for structural applications where high strength is required.
- Excellent Workability: Its softness makes it ideal for severe forming operations.
- Good Corrosion Resistance: Like other 6000 series alloys, it offers good resistance to atmospheric and chemical corrosion.
- Good Machinability: It can be machined easily, though it can be gummier than the harder T6 temper. Sharp tools are recommended.
- Excellent Weldability: It can be readily welded using common methods like TIG and MIG welding. However, welding will affect its properties. The heat from welding will create a "heat-affected zone" (HAZ) that locally anneals the material around the weld. If the part was previously in a stronger temper (like T6), welding will weaken those areas back to an "O-like" condition.
- Soft and Highly Ductile: This is its defining characteristic. The annealing process relieves internal stresses, making it exceptionally easy to bend, form, and shape without cracking.
Comparison of Common 6061 Tempers among T4 T6 and O Temper
| Property | 6061-O (Annealed) | 6061-T4 (Solution Heat Treated) | 6061-T6 (Solution Heat Treated & Artificially Aged) |
| Tensile Strength | Low (~18 ksi / 124 MPa) | Medium (~35 ksi / 241 MPa) | High (~45 ksi / 310 MPa) |
| Yield Strength | Very Low (~8 ksi / 55 MPa) | Medium (~21 ksi / 145 MPa) | High (~40 ksi / 276 MPa) |
| Elongation | Very High (~25-30%) | High (~22%) | Medium (~12%) |
| Formability | Excellent | Good | Fair (can crack if bent sharply) |
| Primary Use | Severe forming, bending | General purpose where some formability is needed | Structural applications, high strength parts |
Applications for 6061-O Sheet
6061-O is chosen specifically when complex and deep forming is the primary manufacturing process. After forming, parts are often heat-treated to a T6 temper to regain high strength.
- Complex Formed Parts: Automotive panels, aircraft skins, enclosures, and covers that require deep drawing or stretching.
- Bending and Fabrication: Used for parts that require tight radius bends where a stronger temper like T6 would risk cracking.
- Welding Preforms: Often used as a base material for complex welded structures that will be fully heat-treated after welding. This ensures the entire assembly, including the heat-affected zones, is brought back to a uniform T6 strength.
- Prototyping: Its easy workability makes it excellent for prototyping shapes before committing to harder tempers.
6061-O aluminum sheet when your primary need is extreme formability and bendability. It is the ideal starting point for complex fabrication projects that will either be heat-treated later to achieve strength or used in non-structural, decorative, or low-stress applications.
