Production Process of Color Coated Aluminum Coil
TMR Aluminum adopts advanced continuous roller coating production line with imported Ransburg electrostatic spraying system and Henkel pretreatment technology. All color-coated aluminum coils strictly follow standardized 8-step production procedures, ensuring ultra-stable color consistency, strong coating adhesion and excellent forming performance for channel letter signage.
Step 1: Substrate Inspection & Uncoiling
We select qualified 1060/3003/5052 aluminum coil substrates. Before production, our QC team checks flatness, thickness tolerance, surface cleanliness and mechanical properties to eliminate defective base materials.
Step 2: Chemical Pretreatment
Multi-stage degreasing, acid washing, alkaline washing and chromate conversion treatment completely remove surface oil, oxide and dust. A uniform chemical conversion film is formed to greatly improve paint adhesion and anti-corrosion ability, preventing peeling and cracking during bending and drilling.
Step 3: Primer Roller Coating
High-performance epoxy or polyester primer is evenly coated on both sides. The primer layer enhances bonding force between aluminum substrate and topcoat, and provides basic anti-rust protection. We use imported PPG / AkzoNobel / Beckers primer paint.
Step 4: High-Temperature Curing
The coated coil enters a 9-zone independent temperature-control oven with constant temperature ranging from 200℃ to 260℃. Precise temperature control ensures full resin cross-linking, forming a dense and tough primer film.
Step 5: Topcoat Finishing Coating
According to customer requirements, PE polyester, SMP silicon-modified polyester or PVDF fluorocarbon topcoat is applied. The topcoat determines the final color, gloss, weather resistance and UV resistance. All colored finishes support matte, brushed, metallic and customized Pantone colors.
Step 6: Secondary High-Temperature Curing & Cooling
After topcoat application, the coil goes through secondary high-temperature baking and then uniform rapid cooling. This process stabilizes the paint film structure, effectively avoiding color fading and coating peeling in later processing.
Step 7: Protective Film Lamination
Optional PE protective film is pasted on the surface to prevent scratches during slitting, bending, grooving and drilling. Different viscosity films are matched for signage processing needs.
Step 8: Final Quality Inspection & Rewinding
Final full inspection includes coating thickness test (±1.5μm accuracy), color difference ΔE test, surface defect check, adhesion test and salt spray test. Qualified coils are rewound, labeled and packed for export shipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What alloy grades are available for color‑coated aluminum coil?
Our main alloys include 1050,1060,3003,3105,5005,5052. 3003 is most popular for outdoor signage, building decoration due to excellent weather resistance. 5052 offers higher strength for wind‑load demanding projects.
Q2: What paint brands do you use for color‑coated aluminum?
We adopt internationally well‑known paint brands: PPG, AkzoNobel, Beckers for PVDF fluorocarbon coating and high‑grade polyester powder coating. For conventional economical orders, qualified domestic premium paint is also optional upon customer request. Different paint brands bring different outdoor service life and cost levels.
Q3: What is the difference between roller‑coating and spray‑painting?
Roller coating: Uniform thin coating layer, stable color batch‑to‑batch, high production efficiency, best for coil mass production.
Spray painting: Thicker paint film, suitable for special colors & custom post‑cut blanks, higher unit cost.
Q4: How many years can color coated aluminum last outdoors?
Regular polyester powder‑coated: 5‑8 years outdoors. Imported PPG / AkzoNobel PVDF fluorocarbon coated aluminum can reach 15‑20 years anti‑fading service life under normal atmospheric environment.
Q5: Can you do custom colors according to Pantone code?
Yes. We support Pantone color matching with PPG, AkzoNobel, Beckers paint system. Please provide your Pantone number or physical color sample for reference. MOQ will be higher for non‑stock special colors.
Q6: Will the coating crack during bending, grooving or drilling?
Qualified roller‑coated aluminum with PPG/AkzoNobel paint will not crack when bent within recommended radius. We suggest test bending before mass processing. Improper sharp bending may cause coating damage.
Q7: What is your MOQ for color coated aluminum coil?
For regular stock colors, small trial order is acceptable. For custom color coating with imported brand paint, MOQ is normally 2‑3 metric tons per color.
Q8: How about your packing for export?
Inner: PE film + moisture‑proof kraft paper with desiccant. Outer: Fumigated wooden pallets fixed with steel straps. Fit for sea container shipment, effective against dampness & mechanical damage.
Q9: What is your production lead‑time?
Stock items: Immediate delivery. New coating production order with imported paint: 20‑30 working days after deposit and color confirmation.
Q10: Can you provide third‑party inspection report?
Yes. ISO9001 certificate, coating thickness test report, salt‑spray test report for PPG/AkzoNobel paint can be offered. Third‑party inspection such as SGS is negotiable.
Q11: What is the standard coating thickness for color coated aluminum?
Polyester powder coating: total film thickness 60‑80μm. PVDF fluorocarbon coating: top coat + back coat total 25‑40μm. Back side also has protective primer to prevent oxidation; custom film thickness is available upon request.
Q12: What salt‑spray performance can your painted aluminum achieve?
Domestic premium paint: 500‑800 hours salt spray test. Imported PPG / AkzoNobel PVDF paint can reach 1000+ hours salt‑spray resistance, suitable for coastal high‑salt‑fog corrosive environment.
Q13: Why color difference happens between batches?
Tiny batch‑to‑batch color deviation is inevitable for coil coating. We strictly control ΔE value ≤2. For big projects, we suggest producing all materials in one single batch to minimize color difference. Physical color sample confirmation before mass production is highly recommended.
Q14: Does color coated aluminum come with protective film?
Yes, PE protective film is optional. Different film thickness & viscosity for channel‑letter bending, CNC drilling and cutting. Please remove protective film within 3‑6 months after receiving goods, avoid film aging sticking onto coating surface.
Q15: What storage conditions are required for color aluminum coils?
Store in dry, ventilated warehouse, keep away from rain, snow and high humidity. Keep coils upright on pallets, do not stack heavy goods on top. Moisture condensation will cause water‑spot defects on painted surface.
Q16: Which temper is better for color coated channel letter coil?
H24 is the most widely used temper. It balances flexibility and rigidity for bending, grooving and drilling. Too soft temper leads to letter frame distortion; too hard temper will cause coating cracking during forming.
Q17: Can color coated aluminum be welded?
Not recommended. High welding temperature will burn and destroy the paint coating. For channel‑letter production, mechanical riveting or screwing (drilling assembly) is the preferred connection method.
Q18: What causes roller marks on coated aluminum surface?
Roller marks are equipment‑related defects. Our QC team inspects every coil surface strictly before delivery. If you have strict surface requirements for visible signage face, please notify us in advance for enhanced surface inspection.
